School, society, and universities pipeline girls into arts and humanities subjects and boys in to STEM (often without meaning to) and as a result, it's often true that the reason for the mother quitting isn't just to do with uneven distribution but also because they are the lower earner and if a family is going to survive on a single income it has to be the larger one. This is obviously broad brush strokes but it is regularly the case. We need to let boys study arts and girls study STEM without stigma.
