Pichinlis is really interesting because despite how close Bioko is to Cameroon, their pidgin developed from Sierra Leonian Krio, not Cameroon Pidgin (although of course there are similarities).
But the people of Bioko were always very independent from the mainlanders, long before Europeans turned up, from what I understand.
I think the figures for Pichinlis are about 100,000 speakers, or approximately 10% of the population of Equatorial Guinea (as of 2007, so that might be higher now).
Cameroon Pidgin is spoken by approximately 12 million people, or nearly 50% of the population (as of 2017). But to be fair Cameroon is a much bigger country.
Thank you for reading, and for inspiring me to reacquaint myself with Pichinlis.
